Privacy Policy — Belief Genome (New Tab)
Last updated: May 24, 2026
The short version
Your data stays on your device. The extension has no backend that collects your content.
The only times anything leaves your computer are actions you explicitly trigger, using
services you opt into (and, for AI, your own API key). We never sell your data, and we
never attach your identity to your Belief Genome.
Belief Genome ("the extension", "we") is a privacy-first new-tab dashboard. This policy
explains, in plain language, what data the extension touches, where it lives, and who
(if anyone) it is shared with.
1. What we store, and where
All of your day-to-day content is stored locally on your device using
the browser's storage and IndexedDB, never on our servers:
- Notes, tasks, important dates/countdowns, habits, bookmarks, app shortcuts
- Your Belief Genome and probe responses (the "Soul")
- Your Memory Archive (saved articles, PDFs, summaries) and its search index
- Settings, preferences, and API keys you enter
We do not have a server that receives, stores, or can read this content.
2. When data leaves your device (only on your action)
The extension contacts external services only for features you choose
to use, and only when you trigger them:
- AI features (optional). If you choose the cloud provider, your request
text is sent to Anthropic (Claude) using your own API key,
solely to return that result. If you choose the local provider, AI runs entirely on your
computer and nothing is sent anywhere. We are not an intermediary; we never receive your
AI requests or responses.
- News & Research feeds (optional). When you add feeds, the extension
fetches those RSS/Atom URLs directly to show headlines.
- Google (optional). If you connect Google, the extension uses OAuth to
read your Calendar (read-only) and access Gmail to display and manage your mail in the widget.
Tokens are held by the browser's identity system; we do not store your Google data on any
server.
- MusicPax (optional). If you use the music widget, it loads and
(optionally) signs into MusicPax.
- Background images (optional). Wallpaper images may be fetched from
Unsplash.
- Belief DNA submission (optional, explicit). If — and only if — you
click to submit your Belief DNA to the public Explore database, an anonymous
signature is sent. Your identity is not attached in any way, and no personal
information is included.
If you never use a given feature, its service is never contacted.
3. What we do NOT do
- We do not sell or rent your data.
- We do not use advertising or third-party tracking/analytics networks.
- We do not collect your browsing history.
- We do not transmit your notes, memories, beliefs, or personal content to our servers
(we don't operate a content server).
- We do not attach your identity to your Belief Genome.
4. Optional, minimal usage signals
The extension can record minimal, anonymous open/engagement counts to help improve the
product. This is opt-in only and contains no personal
information and no content. It is off unless you enable it.
5. AI provider data handling
- Cloud (Claude / Anthropic): governed by Anthropic's own privacy terms,
using your API key. See
https://www.anthropic.com/legal/privacy
- Local (on-device): processed entirely on your computer; nothing is
sent to us or to any third party.
6. Your control
- Everything is local: clearing the extension's storage removes your data.
- You can export a full backup at any time (Settings → Data).
- API keys and connected accounts can be removed at any time in Settings.
- The Belief DNA submission is never automatic and can be skipped entirely.
7. Children
The extension is not directed to children under 13 and does not knowingly collect data
from them.
8. Changes
We may update this policy as features evolve. Material changes will be reflected here
with an updated date.
